Telling the story of the world’s declining kelp forests and why we need to save them

Ocean Wise is a global conservation organization on a mission to build communities
that take meaningful action to protect and restore our ocean. The Ocean Wise Seaforestation program is dedicated to restoring, planting, managing, and caring for underwater seaweed forests.

The challenge

Kelp protects 25-30% of our coastlines, supports thousands of marine species, and sequesters carbon. But when it comes to conservation conversations, kelp is often overlooked. Ocean Wise needed a campaign to help people understand that we need kelp in the same way that we need forests and coral, and that with 50% of the world’s kelp forests declining in the last 50 years, we need to do something about it.

The solution

We partnered with Ocean Wise to craft a compelling narrative around kelp that resonates with diverse audiences and drives donations, aligned with their end-of-year fundraising campaign.

We produced a teaser, a full-length film, and a suite of short social clips documenting Ocean Wise’s seaforestation program. The content features underwater footage of kelp forests, scenes of the team transplanting kelp, and a behind-the-scenes look at the kelp nursery and how it operates. It also includes to-camera interviews with the team cultivating kelp at the nursery.

The impact

The film delivers a powerful case for kelp restoration, highlighting both the urgency of action and the innovative work Ocean Wise is leading at the forefront of this effort.

Don't take our word for it...

“Be the Change helped us to create a compelling video that got to the heart of our work to restore kelp forests in British Columbia. They were a pleasure to work with, consistently creative and engaging, bringing fresh ideas and perspective to the collaboration. Every step of our work together was highly organized, making the process smooth and efficient from start to finish. Their team was respectful of our team’s time and capacity as well as keeping their focus on Ocean Wise’s goals throughout. The quality of their work was outstanding, and the results exceeded our expectations.”
